A contract cannot verify the outside world by consensus alone.
Why it matters
Oracle design exposes a hard boundary: a blockchain can agree perfectly about bad or manipulated input.
The build
Chainlink coordinates multiple data providers and node operators, then combines responses under explicit contract rules. Later work expanded the thesis toward computation, automation and cross-chain messaging.
What proved useful
Price feeds became important to lending, derivatives and stablecoin systems. Their adoption shows that external truth is core infrastructure rather than a minor application detail.
Unremoved trust
Decentralization can reduce single-source failure, but data provenance, operator incentives, update thresholds, governance and cross-chain assumptions remain.
Follow next
Watch concentration among data providers, transparent incident reporting, cross-chain failure containment and whether users understand which contracts depend on which oracle assumptions.
