Who owns crypto—and what makes it valuable?

A framework for known ownership, estimated behavior, long-term-holder metrics, and comparisons with gold and real estate.

An address is observable. Its beneficial owner often is not.

Why it matters

False precision turns blockchain transparency into a story the data cannot support, while category mistakes make unrelated assets look interchangeable.

Known, attributed and estimated

A disclosed corporate holding can be known at a reporting date. A custodian address may be attributable while the underlying beneficial owners remain unknown. Clustering methods estimate common control from transaction behavior and can fail.

GapLimit will not publish a current ownership leaderboard or long-term-holder percentage without a licensed dataset, metric definition, timestamp and uncertainty note.

What long-term holder can mean

Analysts may classify supply by coin age, entity behavior or spending probability. An old output can belong to a lost wallet, active custodian, long-term investor or changed owner whose movement was not visible.

The metric can describe network behavior when its construction is explicit. It cannot read motivation or identity from the ledger.

Bitcoin and gold

Both are discussed through scarcity and non-sovereign monetary properties. Gold has physical uses, established custody and a long institutional history; Bitcoin has native digital transfer, auditable issuance rules and a younger operational record.

Neither produces contractual cash flow merely by being held. Storage, verification, liquidity, regulation and macro sensitivity differ.

Crypto and real estate

Real estate can provide use, rent and locally governed legal title but is indivisible, expensive to transfer and operationally intensive. Cryptoassets can be globally transferable and divisible but may offer no income or enforceable claim.

A value framework asks what the holder owns, why another party may demand it, which cash flows or services exist, how supply changes, and what can permanently impair the thesis.
