What is a memecoin—and what are buyers actually buying?

A beginner guide to cultural tokens, liquidity, concentration and the attention economy.

The meme may be the product; the market structure still determines the risk.

Why it matters

Understanding the object prevents entertainment, participation and investment from being treated as the same decision.

How the value story works

A recognizable joke or symbol lowers the coordination cost of attention. Price can then attract more attention, which attracts more liquidity, until the loop reverses.

What to inspect

Check holder concentration, creator allocations, mint authority, liquidity locks, contract upgrade power, venue depth and whether promotional accounts disclose compensation.

What regulators have—and have not—said

A 2025 SEC staff statement described typical meme coins as culture- and speculation-driven with limited functionality. It expressly represents staff views, not a Commission rule or blanket legal classification.

A clean decision

Assume attention can disappear faster than infrastructure. Size an exposure so total loss does not change essential plans, avoid borrowed money, and do not confuse a large online audience with exit liquidity.
