From money to an on-chain asset

    Name the thing

    A digital asset is a record of value or rights represented through digital infrastructure. Bitcoin is a monetary network and asset; Ethereum is a programmable network whose native asset, ether, pays for computation and helps secure the system.

    Understand the exchange

    An exchange is a marketplace and account system that connects money with digital assets. It may execute the purchase and keep custody afterward. Fees, supported networks, withdrawal rules and legal protections differ.

  3. 03

    Before Buy

    Choose the asset, amount and order type; read the total fee and the price spread. Confirm the asset and network. A market order prioritizes execution, not an exact price.

  4. 04

    After Buy

    Your account balance usually begins as a claim recorded by the exchange. The underlying asset remains represented on its blockchain, commonly pooled in addresses controlled by the custodian until you withdraw.

  5. 05

    Choose custody

    Leave the asset with a custodian or withdraw it to an address whose keys you control. The first delegates operational security; the second transfers recovery and transaction responsibility to you.

  6. 06

    Test the route

    For a first withdrawal, verify the destination address and network, then consider a small test transfer. On-chain transfers are generally difficult or impossible to reverse.

What exists where?

The device does not hold the coins

The blockchain records state. A wallet manages keys. A hardware device protects key material and authorizes signatures.

An operating decision

Exchange custody or self-custody

There is no universal answer for every person, amount, or purpose.

Custodian

The provider manages keys, access and recovery. That is operationally simpler and can suit frequent trading, but adds counterparty, account-freeze, policy and provider-attack risks.

Inspect jurisdiction, withdrawals, security, asset segregation and actual coverage—not the slogan.

Self-custody

You control the keys and do not need an exchange's permission to transact. In return, address errors, backup failure, theft and inheritance become your operating responsibility.

Control is not a synonym for safety; it is a transfer of responsibility.
Connected

Hot wallet

A mobile, desktop or browser app. Convenient for frequent use, but it operates on an internet-connected device with a broader attack surface.

Dedicated signer

Hardware / cold wallet

A dedicated device designed to keep keys away from a general-purpose computer and confirm details before signing. It reduces some risks; it cannot repair a bad backup or approval of the wrong address.

Recovery secret

Do not turn the backup into a copyable file

Someone with the phrase can usually recreate the keys. Legitimate support should not ask you to type it into an email or chat.

Do not keep it in

  • a text file or desktop
  • a screenshot or phone photo
  • cloud notes or a task manager
  • email, chat or shared documents

Balance

  • theft and unauthorized access
  • fire, water and physical decay
  • loss and memory failure
  • whether heirs can actually recover

A secure container, durable metal medium, separate location, or safe-deposit box may help, but each has legal, geographic and access tradeoffs. No container guarantees safety by itself.

SLIP39 multi-share backup

Trezor documents threshold recovery such as three shares out of five. It is a designed cryptographic scheme—not manually dividing seed words among friends.

Ledger documents an optional paid service that splits an encrypted backup across separate providers and uses identity verification. It exchanges one set of self-custody risks for different trust, privacy and availability risks.

Multisignature

A wallet can require several keys to authorize spending. This reduces reliance on one key but adds setup, testing, documentation and recovery complexity. It often warrants qualified help before real funds are involved.
