The original problem

Hashcash asked senders to perform verifiable work before a recipient accepted a message. The goal was to make mass abuse expensive while keeping verification cheap.

What Bitcoin changed

Bitcoin connected proof of work to block production, cumulative chain weight and issuance. That surrounding incentive and consensus structure—not the hash puzzle alone—created the network's security claim.

Disputed and evolving

The appropriate cost of proof of work remains disputed because security, hardware concentration, electricity systems and emissions vary by place and time.
